The weather did not look promising at all as I set out on Thursday 10th June. I had covered every service detail possible on the 50 year old Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow (SRH18723) which I have owned for 40 years. As this was the 61st anniversary of this revolutionary design and an RREC Polish Section event I decided in a carefree moment to drive rather than adopt the trailer-queen, weak-kneed option. My worse weather fears were consummated.

I remained optimistic through the many showers on the 480 kms drive from Warsaw. And then suddenly I really lost my cultivated cool as it began to hail. A wild storm galloped over us. I drove into a small village from the highway.

Added to this pressure of a potentially about to be destroyed Rolls-Royce, I was desperate for a loo - really desperate with adolescent trouser pressure. I parked under a sheltering tree, praying branches would not fall in the wind. I noticed an estate agent open and thought instantly of the unquestioning assistance and hospitality of Poles when danger threatens one. Through the teeming rain, wind, hail and flooded torrents in the street I rushed into his office through the hail and rain shouting in some disarray "Help! I need a lavatory (toilet)!" all Polish lost under stress. "Of course Sir! Just through there.' The surprisingly professional gent rose from his immaculate desk and switched on a lamp in an immaculate and sweet smelling bathroom alcove. "Thank the Lord!" I thought

I returned to the car through the tempest, noticing the hail was smaller now so no dents. The storm passed and I continued on in brilliant sunshine towards Classica Mierzęcin. My freedom as ever saved by a Pole ....

Every passing year increased numbers arrive for this elegant event

In the Autumn of 1965 the most radical design for Rolls-Royce was revealed to the public at the Paris Motor Show. Dealers caught their first glimpse of the car on September 30th and October 1st. As you know, the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow (and the Bentley T Series) were designed by John Blatchley who produced a far more compact design than the previous Silver Cloud but with at least as much interior space.

Parked beside the current models, the Shadow appears dainty and elegant indeed, a car easy to use and manage (except parking!) in the traffic conditions of 2026.

Being of a monocoque construction with self-leveling suspension and disc brakes, it marked the most significant departure in 60 years from the chassis based, coach-built models of the past. From the outset it was designed with the owner/driver in mind. Over a period of more than 10 years, 16,717 Silver Shadows and 1712 Bentley T-Series were produced making it the most successful Rolls-Royce of all time. A much underestimated car and a revolution at the time.

I have owned mine for 40 years and it remains completely original. This magnificent vehicle has given me intense leisure experiences of many varieties over the years. However, I will remain tactfully silent of my own detailed 'adventurous history' with it.

The original build sheets of my example, SRH18723 from the Hunt House, which I treasure, indicate that my car was completed on February 5th 1974. That makes it an original 52 years of age with no restoration, simply preventative maintenance in the spirit of an aircraft. A confirmation of the Rolls-Royce quality longevity legend surely!

Thursday 11/VI/2026 was devoted to crew registration and registration of entries for the Concours d'Elegance under the auspices of FIVA. There were a number of exceptional and valuable cars this year. In total 62 cars were entered and numbered. 18 cars were entered in the FIVA Elegance Contest. This year the Concours d'Elegance section was prestigiously upgraded to a FIVA Premier Event.

Here are a few ...

The torrential rain held off and the day closed with a particularly delicious bonfire and barbeque dinner at the Altana Grillowa.

Friday morning at 9.00am 12/VI/2026, saw us gathering for a rally to the town of Gorzów. The drive of 56 kms in welcome sunshine was through forested parkland and agricultural country. This excursion was gloriously picturesque, as if immersed in a gargantuan creation of Capability Brown.

The rally was accompanied and security protected by myriad police with blue flashing lights and sirens riding powerful motorbikes. The route was closed to conventional traffic and during the pre-rally briefing the officer instructed: "Drive through any red lights. Ignore speed limits. We will be there for your security! We have prepared your passage to freedom!" Such inspiring humanity and sense of theater on the part of the authorities in Poland! They often passed our line of rally cars at high speed with flashing lights. Everyone enjoyed the drama immensely.

We parked outside the new Philharmonia concert hall and took the greatest pleasure in  listening to an interesting rehearsal for a concert the same evening.

The rally assembled outside the new Philharmonia Concert Hall, Gorzów

I had never considered or for that matter even heard, let alone listened to, electronic 'art music' that accompanied computer games. Apparently this was a popular genre some years ago. Members of the Gorzów Philharmonic Orchestra had formed a small chamber group to play transcriptions for strings of these electronic computer-game pieces. There were also theatrical elements expressed by antics by some of the musicians! The concert was to take place the same evening as the informal rehearsal we attended.

After accustoming myself to the unfamiliarity and essential melodic simplicity,  I found the music and the idea absolutely fascinating. The concept dovetails neatly with the Polish genius and design talent they have for mathematics, computer games and animation.

We returned to the Pałac via a similar green picturesque route. The evaluation of vehicles entered in the FIVA Concours d'Elegance then took place.

Friday concluded with an excellent and most informative as well as delicious Pałac Mierzęcin Wine Tasting of various estate Riesling vintages followed by an excellent dinner in the Michelin (!) recommended Destylarnia Restaurant at the palace. The inclement weather had sadly forced a change of menu from the usual al fresco barbecue dinner in the Pałac Mierzęcin vineyards.

Saturday June 13th was an open public day, free for visitors without ticketing. A highly detailed presentation and owner interview of all the cars took place on a platform before the palace. This delight was expertly and entertainingly delivered with encyclopedic car knowledge by Patryk Mikiciuk. He owns a superb Rolls-Royce Camargue incidentally.

Many other diverting activities were also taking place during this event.

Dinner and the Commander's Ball would conclude Saturday June 13th. Distracted by the monumental exterior architecture, the interior of the restored palace seldom features in my photographs. Here are a few:

To conclude the day, a Michelin gourmet dinner was served, mainly accompanied by appropriate 2023 vintage  Mierzęcin Riesling wine from the extensive vineyards on the estate.

The final day, Sunday 14th June, was also an open public day. I had some very engaging conversations about my Royce and especially the '907 HRH' registration plate I retain for display purposes and as a 'conversation piece'.

The original build sheets of SRH 18723 which I retain, indicate that my car was completed on February 5th 1974. I purchased it in Wargrave near Henley-on-Thames on 19 May 1987 and paid £12,850 which would be equivalent to £ 51,000  in 2026. Not a great investment in real terms but wonderful in every other way.

The car was part of the Rolls-Royce fleet owned by the Sultan of Oman, HM Qaboos bin Said, who loved the village and Rolls-Royce motor cars. He sadly died in 2020. This explains the registration plate 907 HRH (His Royal Highness) which I have kept out of pure vanity. Educated in England and at RMA Sandhurst he took a keen interest in youth projects. As part of an Omani Evening in 1985 he contributed an 'Arabian Feast' together with a group of fully costumed ritual Royal Omani Sword Dancers and Musicians to the Wargrave Festival.

A cultural treasure - the Sword Dancers of Oman
(CGTN)

The Sultan had bought the Manor of Wargrave and the title in 1973.  His mother and some of his wives used the cars which are now all sold. He was also chauffeured in them on his visits. The manor is a horse stud where he bred thoroughbred Arabians. Rolls-Royce cars are often accompanied by remarkable provenance by former custodians. You are a temporary custoidian of the glorious vehicle, never an owner. They pass through family generations....

The main official event of the day was the presentation of the audience awards with some highly stylish winners.

During the afternoon I chatted to some charming  'period policemen' of excellent manners! They ensured, despite AI and social media, that I left this delightful and fun event for Warsaw in an ebullient mood without the slightest unpleasant incident! Embracing the past with no regrets, only nostalgia .....

I am so looking forward to next year at arguably the best classic car event in Poland.

122nd Memorial Lunch, Warsaw May 2nd 2026 / The Hon. Charles Stewart Rolls meets Henry Royce at the Midland Hotel, Manchester on 4th May 1904

May 4th again!

My sentimental celebration of the 122nd anniversary meeting of Sir Charles Rolls and Sir Henry Royce at the Midland Hotel Manchester on 4th May 1904 rolls around again. This historic event was customarily celebrated by the CCC and the Secretary of the RREC Polish Section at the Hotel Bristol in Warsaw, Poland. However, this year the location of a newly established tradition needed to be different.

Fig. 1 In 1908, Rolls had the 70 hp 40/50 chassis number 60785 sent to the well-regarded H.J. Mulliner coachbuilding company, and fitted with a unique body. Officially a roadster style, it featured a large rear platform for storing the wicker basket of a small hot air balloon, and even had patent leather flexible rear fenders to make loading and unloading the basket much easier. It quickly picked up the unofficial name of the Balloon Car.

Fig. 2  Charles Stewart Rolls (left) and Miss Vera Hedges Butler (center) in the gondola of a gas balloon. The lady at right has been identified by a reader as the Hon. Mrs. May Constance Assheton Harbord (née Cunigham), who was the first woman in the United Kingdom to earn an aeronaut’s certificate. The gentleman to the rear is not known at this time.

The Hon. Charles Rolls, co-founder of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, was famous for his consumption of champagne during balloon flights in the 1900s. In 1901, he adventured in a balloon named The City of New York over Sidcup, Kent. As travelling companions he took Vera Hedges Butler (the daughter of Frank Butler, a wealthy wine merchant who helped found the Royal Automobile Club) and Stanley Spencer (aeronaut and professional balloonist). They grandly ‘sipped champagne’ while discussing the formation of the Royal Aero Club.

DRIVEN BY PERFECTION

·                  Any look at his remarkable life work reveals a driven, even obsessive character with a relentless work ethic forged in childhood poverty and frequent adversity.

The quest for perfection extended to every aspect of Royce’s professional and personal life

·                  His famous maxim “Strive for perfection in everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it better” still informs and inspires the company’s activities today.

“Sir Henry Royce bequeathed to the world an extraordinary legacy of engineering innovation and achievement. He also left us, his successors at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, an unequivocal instruction: ‘Strive for perfection in everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it better’. Sir Henry himself lived out this maxim in every aspect of his personal and professional life. Today, as we mark the 160th anniversary of his birth, his challenge still informs and inspires everything we do. It serves as a constant reminder that perfection is a moving target: it is never ‘done’. There is always something we can refine, adjust, rework, reinvent or innovate in our pursuit of perfection; and that is what makes our life and work here so exciting.”

Yes, of course a commemoration such as this was not easy to arrange as it is always  a Polish national holiday weekend and everyone is away! Friday the 1st May was known in the past as Labour Day and is now a state holiday. I stocked up on food and champagne to stylishly celebrate 'The Meeting'. Our Rolls-Royce celebration took place on Saturday afternoon May 2nd.

Such a concentration as this may appear trivial in view of the world threats that engulf us. But one must continue with normal life as best as one is able, submerged as we are in dire information. In the present war climate of fraught notions of threat, sovereignty and the apparent abandonment of international law and moral values, this Constitution Day was particularly emotional and intensely nationalistic.

The first written constitution in Europe was promulgated in Poland on May 3 1791, emerging from a peculiarly Polish obsession with the notion of national sovereignty and personal freedom. ‘For your freedom and ours!’ was the cry in many foreign engagements on the side of liberty. King Stanisław Augustus was triumphantly carried shoulder high through the streets of the capital upon its proclamation.

The Husaria or Polish Winged Cavalry

Based on Enlightenment principles, it created an hereditary monarchy, reformed the government and limited the powers of the szlachta (Polish gentry). The day is still a public holiday in Poland marked by mounted military parades in full 17th Century costume and modern camouflage dress, folk dancing and re-enactments of the King’s proclamation by actors in the forecourt of the Palace on the Island in picturesque Łazienki Park. Edmund Burke celebrated this Polish Revolution by declaring in a eulogy that the constitution was ‘founded on similar principles towards the stable excellency of a British constitution.’

In response, Catherine the Great massed her Russian troops and precipitated a year long war. In 1793 the defeated Poles were forced to rescind the constitution, Prussia and Russia gorged on more of the country and the Second Partition came into being. The same foe has created increased vigilance and concentrated defense spending in Poland once again.

The interest in older Rolls-Royce motor cars in Poland is rather limited, but for me May 4th is May 4th even if it conflicts with public holidays! However, driving our cars in dense holiday traffic on a rural excursion is not enjoyable.

As a replacement activity, on Saturday afternoon, I offered at my home in Warsaw, a glass of French champagne, food and a film. The ‘Rolls champagne’ may well have been Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve, the smallest Grande Marque, well known and appreciated in  European Royal circles and Edwardian England at the turn of the century (particularly by 'Bertie' - Edward VII).

This delightful beverage was possibly sipped by Charles Rolls high above the Kent landscape. This truly outstanding champagne was served together with freshly baked French puff pastry snacks, baked chicken legs marinated in honey, a technicolour salad,  prunes wrapped in grilled bacon, a superb chocolate mousse and other sweet goodies. Some Alsace Riesling may also have crept in!

Some CCC and RREC Polish Section members gathered at lunch in Warsaw

For drivers with slow metabolism, I have also found an excellent German, non-medicinal, non-alcoholic sparkling wine, called Dr. LO. Try it if you are of a nervous disposition!

Various other diversions were offered to the CCC (my Casual Car Club) and the RREC (Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts' Club) Polish Section members who also attended. This rather intimate, growing commemoration tradition is a particularly pleasant occasion, leafing through many Rolls-Royce and Bentley large format books which of course included, among others, those monumental and magnificent Davide Bassoli volumes. In addition, we perused recent editions of Spirit & Speed, the brilliant Swiss Section's Alpine Eagle publication and the 20-Ghost Club News & Record magazine.

I also screened the warmly charming film The Yellow Rolls-Royce with its glittering cast directed by Anthony Asquith and dialogues by the brilliant scriptwriter Terence Rattigan: Ingrid Bergman, Rex Harrison, Art Carney, George C. Scott, Alain Delon, Jeanne Moreau, Shirley MacLaine  and Omar Sharif.
